Gladiator inspired by a character from Ben Eblen

A character sculpting project in 3D modelling is a creative and technical process focused on designing and building a highly detailed and expressive digital character. It involves shaping and refining a 3D model to capture the anatomy, personality, and unique traits of the character.

A character sculpting project is about breathing life into a concept through digital craftsmanship. It blends anatomy, storytelling, and technical skill to build a character that’s not just visually compelling, but ready to perform in digital worlds.

Using a Concept from one of Ben Eblen’s posts, I created a character from start to finish.

Textured character

I tried to give this character a painterly look. Using Ambient Occlusion and thickness generators, I made the details stand out more. Then I used paint layers to give the finishing touches.

Turnaround textured and wireframe

Finally, I imported the textured model into Maya, added some lights and a background and proceeded to render the scene. I also changed the textures to a wireframe shader, with ambient occlusion for better definition, to show the topology.

From this project I develop a strong understanding of form, structure, and physical realism, even in stylised designs. I learned to bring characters to life by translating ideas into expressive 3D forms.
